The Greyhound’s Stature has Certainly Diminished
Over the centuries 4000-5000 years ago it was revered by Egyptian Pharaohs. It was the one dog that would go into their tent at night. For 700 years in England you had to be of noble birth to have a greyhound dog, you could be jailed for possessing one and not being of nobility.
Then greyhounds were raced, exploited, used solely to make money, and now, in Kansas anyway, they have reached a new low point. In Kansas the law protecting pets excludes greyhounds from that designation of DOG. I understand the National Greyhound Association is based in Abilene, Kansas and I understand that legislators from Kansas must be a different breed but they are now in an area that has angered greyhound advocates, adopters and veterinarians across the nation. Gary Guccione the executive director of National Greyhound Association says the law need not be changed because greyhounds are not bred as pets and should therefore not fall under pet protection laws. Of course, now the industry is trying to say after greyhounds are not winning it spends millions of dollars a year trying to find homes. I translate that to mean when greyhounds end their racing career they become dogs and then pets. Does Mr. Guccione say one thing to advocates and something completely different to Kansas legislators? Could it be that legislators receive campaign donations from breeders and the racing industry? Could it be that legislators receive special attention if they visit greyhound-racing venues? Could it be legislators have truly recognized a greyhound for what it is? Is it a greyphant pertaining to the elephant, is it a greyat pertaining to the cat, is it a greyion pertaining to the lion, or is it a greyaffe pertaining to the giraffe due to its long legs? But surely it must be a greyuck pertaining to a duck or should we call it a duckhound, will we see this new species flying across the finish line soon?

Kansas legislators need to reverse their ridiculous dog legislation. Call greyhounds DOGS because that is what they are and hopefully they will become our PETS! And protect them just as every other animal / pet deserves.
