Gaspar Turns 10!

March 13th is a birthday celebration of sorts in the Wolf household. Some of our older adopters might remember that in January of 2004, NGAP brought several galgos to the United States from Spain. As it turned out, one of those galgos, named Love, was pregnant. We decided to let her continue with the pregnancy and on March 13th, Love gave birth to 13 galgo puppies! These 13 very special puppies were raised by hand in our home by Mrs. Wolf herself, who gallantly gave up normal living to care for these critters in their early stages of life. They could not have gotten better care. She lived with them and slept near them for two months. She separated the strong from the weak so the weaker puppies could get more time with their mother. We spent a small fortune on formula once they began eating. Many of them grew to be very large dogs, with at least half of them weighing over 90 lbs, and none were even remotely overweight.
Sadly, over the years, we have seen their numbers dwindle. Most of them have been put to sleep at our facility in Philadelphia, the youngest, Chase, of kidney failure at 18 months of age, then more at the seven year mark. Over the last two years, the flock has thinned even further.
Gaspar, which means 'treasure' in Spanish, is still with the Wolf family and is happily celebrating his 10th birthday today. We believe that he may very well be the last dog standing of the 13 galgo puppies. He is still doing well and has a wonderful appetite, which makes life so much easier. Sometimes when he gets up in the morning, he will favor one leg for a minute or so and we are watching that very closely, but he is always there to greet us with a smile whenever we return from an outing.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GASPAR!
