NGAP Greyhounds

NGAP is an independent non-profit corporation registered in the state of Pennsylvania. It has no affiliation with any Greyhound track or other organization. It is funded by adoption fees and donations. Donations are tax deductible. NGAP is a 501 (c)(3) corporation.
At our kennel facility we house greyhounds and also board them for vacationing owners. We also have a surgical facility and do over 2,000 greyhound procedures annually, more than any other facility in the United States.
Our Adoption Program started in 1989. Its primary purpose is to help find adoptive homes for former racing Greyhounds and to educate the public about them. We built our own compound in Philadelphia to house Greyhounds with full-time, live-in caretakers. Every Greyhound has National Greyhound Association tattoos, and is, of course, purebred.
Thousands of Greyhounds are killed every year because they cannot run fast enough to make money. Adoption is their only chance of survival!

How the Adoption Program Works

When we receive your application and check, we check your references. Once you have been approved, we match up your request with the Greyhounds presently available to us.

All of our Greyhounds go through a complete medical checkup and are spayed or neutered and given all vaccinations. After we have completed everything, and your Greyhound is happy and settled in, we notify you about pick up or shipment arrangements. An Adoption Package is sent to you with all the information you will need to know about taking care of your Greyhound. You will also receive a two week and six month follow up report. The adoption process generally takes 2-4 weeks. Remember - we will always be there for help if you need it.

National Greyhound Adoption Program announces it is now beginning to use the best dental laser currently on the market today: The Biolase MD.

Read more here

WaterlaseMD

Since we originally prepared the release about our new laser, we have done at least 100 procedures with it in our clinic. We find its use nothing less than spectacular. Being the first veterinary clinic in the United States to have this laser gives us an outstanding opportunity to guide and hopefully influence others to use it. In addition to its use for dental work, it has a wide range of other uses for both hard and soft tissue. We recently did what is normally a delicate operation that is associated with extensive bleeding and it went spectacularly well. We will write about it shortly, with many photos to come.

WARNING - DO NOT USE COCOA MULCH IF YOU OWN PETS

DON'T USE THAT COCOA MULCH!

Verified by Snopes
VERIFIED ALSO BY GOOGLE
Yesterday one of our dog agility friends experienced a tragedy and wanted
me to pass a special message along to all of my dog loving friends and
family. Please tell every dog owner you know.
Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa
Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and
it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso
decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large
helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something
new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and
took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a
seizure and died instantly.
Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further
investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to
dogs.
Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true
that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can
suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual
dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it."
True information about the mulch can be found here - http://www.snop
es.com/critters/crusader/cocoa.htm This site gives the following
information:
Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and
other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called
"Theobromine".
It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really
attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already
occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution, check what you are
using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your
gardens.
Theobromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate
especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs.
Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a
xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog
that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells
developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the
stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence
of lethal amounts of theobromine.
Please email the manufacturer at michellemessick@hersheys.com and request
that accurate information about this product be posted on the packaging to
avoid further tragedy.
PLEASE GIVE THIS THE WIDEST DISTRIBUTION !!!

Daytona Beach Kennel Club Has Repeat Case of Negligence when a Greyhound Dies because a Track Trainer Fails to seek Medical Treatment

In January 1996 a greyhound by the name of ‘He’s My Denny’ died due to the negligence of David Gibby, a kennel employee at Daytona Beach. Gibby was first arrested under a new law linking Pari-Mutuel regulation abuses to civil code penalties. Gibby was later found guilty of felony animal abuse.
Ten years later a similar situation at the Daytona Track has appeared where kennel helper, Doug Fuhrman and trainer Rusty King, have been arrested today for felony animal abuse in the death of greyhound ‘Pete Sirocco.’ These men said they could not afford to seek treatment of two greyhounds injured in a kennel fight and left ‘Pete’ to bleed to death in his kennel crate. He was found by personnel from a local greyhound adoption program: Greyhound Pets of America twenty hours after the injury. He was taken on a makeshift stretcher to the Ravenswood Animal Clinic and transferred to a twenty-four hour ER facility. Initially ‘Pete’ rallied but ultimately he succumbed to his wounds. If ‘Pete’ had received immediate medical attention he probably would have survived. The other dog injured in the fight was taken in for veterinary care by Greyhound Pets of America and it survived. Their vet cost was $4,700.00.
This happens in the shadow of greyhound racing’s largest event now going on at Tampa St. Pete Greyhound Track where greyhounds are racing for a total one million dollar purse. Already one greyhound has died, ‘Moon Mountain Dipper’ died after a schooling race for greyhounds preparing for the greyhound industry’s big event. Whether you are a greyhound adopter or involved in greyhound racing I am sure you are appalled by the actions of these two kennel workers. You can contact the Florida State Attorneys Office by fax: 386-239-7716 attention: Prosecuting Attorney Susan Desrosiers.
We all need to be sure the State of Florida prosecutes Fuhrmann and King to the fullest extent of the law.
